Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor backs Steven Gerrard to get a top Premier League job in the future

Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor believes Steven Gerrard will manage a leading Premier League club one day – once he has finished his work at Ibrox.

McGregor returned to Gers over the summer for his second spell at the club, having made over 200 appearances for them before leaving to join Turkish side Besiktas in 2012.

He has been impressed by what he has seen of Gerrard's management style so far and believes the former Liverpool man can succeed back in England, hinting at a return to Anfield for Gerrard at some point in the future.

"As a person and as a manager, he's really good and it wouldn't surprise me one day if he gets - and I am not saying Rangers isn't a big job, it's a massive job - a top Premiership club," McGregor told Sky Sports News.

Hearts' unbeaten start to the Scottish Premiership season juddered to a halt as they were comfortably beaten 3-1 by Rangers at Ibrox.

"The club he's been at all his life [Liverpool] is a massive club as well, and there are a lot of similarities [with Rangers]."

Rangers are sixth but just five points off leaders Hearts in a competitive Scottish Premiership and lie top of their Europa League group with a win and a draw from their opening two fixtures.

McGregor refused to be drawn on their chances of winning the Scottish title this season, having last done so in 2011, but admitted they might be contenders come the end of the season.

"I very rarely talk about that," he added.

"You want to be as consistent as possible and then things might happen at the end of the season, they might not."
