Hibernian head coach Paul Heckingbottom says the club have a clear plan to be successful, and he felt they were a really good fit

Paul Heckingbottom says taking the head coaching position at Hibernian was a "no-brainer".

The former Leeds and Barnsley boss was appointed on Wednesday, signing a three-year contract and replacing Neil Lennon, who left the club by mutual consent in January.

Heckingbottom said "Hibs always stood out to me as a club with a plan, a real clear way they want to do things and be successful.

"When you think it's a good fit - like I did - I think you've got to go for it."

Despite speculation former Oxford boss Michael Appleton would take over, Heckingbottom secured the position and described how conversations between him and the club told him this was the right opportunity.

He said: "We had some initial conversation: what they wanted from me, the questions they asked me, the answers I got from my questions just really reinforced what I thought and made me think it was a really good fit which is obviously the same the other way so yeah, a no-brainer."

Hibs are eighth in the Scottish Premiership table - five points off St Johnstone in sixth - but have won just once in their last six matches. Heckingbottom outlined his goals for the club, saying: "We've got some short-term ones in terms of still chasing that top six. Form has not been great. Chasing the top six in the short term.

"But longer-term, it's just to overachieve in terms of budget, obviously. Everyone looks to do it.

"So looking bigger picture, the form we'd need to get in the top six this season probably between now and the end of the season is top four, top three, top two form.

"But that's the form we want to try and achieve anyway in the longer-term, so it just starts now."

The 41-year-old's first game in charge will be at home on Saturday, as Hibs host 10th-place Hamilton Academical.
