The Tallaght Stadium in Dublin will provide the unlikely setting for a piece of footballing history on Monday night when Cristiano Ronaldo makes his Real Madrid debut. The world's most expensive player will take to the field for a pre-season friendly against Shamrock Rovers in a match which can be seen live on Sky Sports 1 and HD1. When Manchester United accepted an offer of £80million for Ronaldo earlier this summer, the 24-year-old forward probably had visions of leading his new team to domestic and European success. Playing alongside other superstars such as Kaka and Karim Benzema, he will also hope to produce such sparkling performances that any doubts about whether he is worth his record-breaking transfer fee are quickly dispelled. If Ronaldo has not already achieved greatness then it certainly awaits at the Santiago Bernabeu, but 40 years after Neil Armstrong first set foot on the surface of the moon, the Portuguese forward's Real Madrid odyssey begins with his own 'small step'. Ronaldo will be keen to make an immediate impression but he admits he does not have much knowledge about the League of Ireland outfit. Asked about Shamrock, he said on Sky Sports News: "To be honest I don't know any players from this team. Sorry." Shamrock will not have had such widespread media attention in the past and chairman Jonathan Roche recognises that it is an excellent opportunity for his men. "We're obviously going to be live on Sky Sports so we want to put on a good show, and show the good standard we have and the good supporters."
