Albert Ferrer has left his position as Cordoba head coach with the club propping up the Primera Division table.

The former Barcelona, Chelsea and Spain defender guided the Andalusian club to promotion to the top flight for the first time in 42 years but they have failed to win any of their eight La Liga games.

Arriving two days after a 2-1 home defeat to Malaga, a statement published on cordobacf.com read: "The coach has been informed of the decision during a meeting at the clubhouse.

"The club would like to thank Albert Ferrer for the work he carried out, and his name will be linked to the history of Cordoba after he achieved promotion to the Primera Division after 42 years of waiting.''

Ferrer took over at the Estadio Nuevo Arcangel in February and duly steered Cordoba into seventh place in the Segunda Division. Los Califas then defeated Las Palmas in the play-off final.

A 2-0 opening day defeat at Real Madrid came as little surprise to fans but subsequent results - including a 3-0 loss to Valencia - caused growing concern in the southern city.

Reports in Spain suggest Ferrer, the first La Liga coach to lose his job this season, could be replaced by former Deportivo La Coruna boss Fernando Vazquez.
