Chivu out for up to a month

Internazionale have been handed a fresh injury blow following the news that defender Cristian Chivu looks set to be sidelined for a number of weeks. The Romanian has injured his shoulder and looks likely to miss Inter's UEFA Champions League meeting with Fenerbahce on Wednesday. Chivu sustained the injury in Romania's recent 3-1 friendly defeat to Germany and will undergo scans on Thursday. However, it is initially thought that Chivu will be unavailable for selection by Inter coach Roberto Mancini for up to a month. Chivu's injury increases Mancini's defensive selection problems ahead of Inter's first game of the Champions League group stages. The Giuseppe Meazza boss is already missing a number of key defenders through injury and suspension, including Marco Materazzi, who is not expected to be back in action until the end of October after damaging his thigh at the beginning of the season.
