Jadon Sancho was struck by a pocket lighter thrown from the crowd as Borussia Dortmund slumped to a 4-2 derby defeat to Schalke on Saturday.

The England international was hit by the object while celebrating Dortmund's opening goal in the 13th minute and required treatment on the side of the pitch before he was able to continue.

The 19-year-old set up Mario Gotze to head in the opener with a perfectly-weighted chipped pass over the top of the Schalke defence, but Dortmund's title hopes suffered a significant setback with the defeat in a fiery derby.

After Gotze's opener, Daniel Caligiuri equalised with a penalty and Schalke then took the lead through Salif Sane before Dortmund had Marco Reus sent off.

Caligiuri fired in his second and Schalke's third before Marius Wolf received Dortmund's second red card.

In the final minutes, Axel Witsel pulled one back before Breel Embolo restored Schalke's two-goal cushion.

Defeat means second-placed Dortmund could find themselves four points behind Bayern Munich by the end of the weekend, should the leaders win their game in hand against Nurnberg on Sunday, while Schalke took a significant step to guaranteeing safety, moving nine points ahead of Stuttgart in the relegation play-off place.
