A KNVB Cup first round match may have to be replayed after a Dutch referee incorrectly used the ABBA method of penalties, despite the format not being "in accordance with the rules of the game" in the Netherlands.

Fourth division side FC Lisse defeated fifth-tier club HSV Hoek 5-4 on penalties on Wednesday night, although referee Arbiter Nagtegaal erroneously used the ABBA method of penalty kicks instead of the more commonly used ABAB format.

The Dutch FA, the KNVB, have confirmed they are investigating the incident ahead of Thursday's draw for the second round of the Cup.

"We have requested statements from the referee and both clubs," said a KNVB spokesperson. "We are investigating what impact it has had and what we will do with this match.

"We want to make a decision today because Thursday night is the draw for the next round."

Hoek manager Danny de Vrieze believes both clubs will be entered into the draw for the second round.

"I went to the referee after the penalty shootout and he already indicated he had made a mistake," said De Vrieze. "KNVB has already contacted Hoek and there is a chance that both clubs will be in the draw on Thursday."

While a number of European leagues including the EFL have trialled the ABBA format, the Dutch FA is yet to adopt the method.

Earlier this month, the SPFL launched their own investigation after the ABBA format was incorrectly used during an Irn-Bru Cup tie between The New Saints and Livingston.
