Nevland to join Groningen

Former Man Utd forward Erik Nevland has signed a deal to join Groningen.

Former Manchester United forward Erik Nevland has signed a deal to join Groningen in November.

The Norwegian striker left The Red Devils in December 1999 to return to his homeland to link up with Viking Stavanger.

But he is now heading to Holland after concurring on a deal with Groningen which will tie him to the club until June 2008.

Groningen have been chasing the 26-year-old for several months and appeared to abandon their interest in August due to financial concerns.

They have now resolved those issues and persuaded Nevland to snub an offer to stay at Viking.

His deal with Groningen will commence on November 1 and he hopes to be able to play for the Eredivisie outfit upon his arrival.

Though the transfer window is officially closed, Groningen will seek dispensation to select Nevland, with their plea likely to be looked upon favourably due to Uefa's belief that it is unfair for Scandinavian footballers to wait until January to move when their season concludes in the autumn.
