West Ham scraped past Birkirkara 1-0 in the first leg of their Europa League second qualifying round tie, with James Tomkins netting a 90th-minute winner.
The Maltese minnows, who qualified for the Europa League by winning the FA trophy in their homeland, frustrated the Premier League side until Tomkins bundled home a corner late on.
