David Silva says he retired from the Spanish national team to spend time with his baby son, who battled for his life after being born five months prematurely.

Manchester City midfielder Silva, who spent much of last season at a hospital in Valencia with his son, told Sky Sports News in July it had been the "hardest period" of his life.

Since then, Silva has retired from international football with the 32-year-old officially bringing a halt to his career with Spain when he takes an honorary kick-off before a friendly against Bosnia a week on Sunday.

"My family are still convinced I could be playing now, but having the chance to enjoy some more time with my boy when I'm not travelling away with the national team is a good thing," he told the Daily Mail.

Silva had intended to leave City in 2020 when his current deal expires to fulfil his dream of retiring with Spanish side Las Palmas, however, he has suggested he may backtrack on those plans.

"I don't know. Maybe," he added.

"In theory, that's my time - a year-and-a-half I've got left to play (at City). But, in football, things change around don't they? You never know.

"All I'm going to do is concentrate on enjoying every minute between now and then. At that time, I'll see what I think."
