August
Arsenal matched the record for the
biggest opening-day win in Premier League history. The Gunners' 6-1 success at Everton was the biggest since Liverpool beat Crystal Palace by the same scoreline in 1994.
Tottenham enjoyed their
best ever start to a Premier League campaign. They had never before picked up nine points from their opening three fixtures; in fact their best previous start was the 2002/03 season when they picked up seven points from their opening fixtures - a feat they repeated in 2005/06.
September
I was at Wembley to see England beat Croatia and qualify for the 2010 World Cup finals - the first time they'd reached a World Cup with
two qualifying games to go.
Yossi Benayoun scored a hat-trick against Burnley and became the
first player to score hat-tricks in the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup.
Portsmouth's run of six consecutive losses was the
worst start any club has made in Premier League history. No other team has lost all six of their opening games. You have to go back 26 years for the last time a team lost their opening six games in the top flight - Leicester in 1983/84.
Liverpool scored
22 goals in their first seven games - their previous best Premier League start was 16 goals in both 1996/97 and 1994/95.
October
Burnley
won their first four home games - no side had previously been relegated from the Premier League having done so.
Robert Green's red card against Ukraine made him the
12th England international to be sent off in 879 matches - and the first goalkeeper.
Liverpool
lost four games in a row to Fiorentina, Chelsea, Sunderland and Lyon. The last time that happened was 22 years ago when they lost to Tottenham, Wimbledon and Norwich twice (including the League Cup Final) in 1987.
Arsenal took their goal tally to 29 in nine Premier League games, equalling the
best tally from the first nine games of any team in any Premier League season - matching the 29 Arsenal themselves managed in 2004.
November
On November 1,
eight red cards were dished out in the Premier League - to Philipp Degen, Jamie Carragher, Diniyar Bilyaletdinov, Carlos Cuellar, Kenwyne Jones, Radoslav Kovac, Geovanni and Jlloyd Samuel. Never before had eight players been sent off on the same day in the Premier League.
Burnley's Graham Alexander became the sixth oldest scorer in Premier League history - and his two goals against Hull also made him the Premier League's
oldest ever brace scorer.
Robbie Keane scored against France in their World Cup qualifier. That was the 34th game in which he has scored for Ireland - and in all of those games they have
never lost in 90 minutes.
Tottenham beat Wigan 9-1 to record the
second biggest winning margin in Premier League history. The biggest was Manchester United's 9-0 win over Ipswich Town on March 4 1995.
Jermain Defoe's
five-goal haul in that game matched Andy Cole's five against Ipswich in 1994/95 and Alan Shearer's five against Sheffield Wednesday in 1999/00. All three failed to finish those particular seasons as Premier League top scorer.
Darren Bent's goal against Arsenal meant he had
scored against all of the "Big Four" in the same season. The last man to score against Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United in a single Premier League season was former Bolton striker Michael Ricketts in 2001/02
December
Manchester City equalled the Premier League record of
seven consecutive draws, which was previously achieved by Southampton in the 1994-95 season and by Norwich City in the 1993-94 season.
Ryan Giggs became the
17th player to score 100 Premier League goals, but he needed 534 games to do it - more than the other 16.
Manyor Figueroa's goal for Wigan against Stoke became the
third longest range goal in Premier League history at 60.59 yards. Paul Robinson's 84.74-yard free-kick for Tottenham against Watford in 2007 is by far the longest range goal ever in the Premier League.
Fernando Torres scored his 50th Premier League goal in his 72nd Premier League game, making him the
fourth fastest 50-goal man in the competition's history behind Andy Cole (65 games), Alan Shearer (66 games) and Ruud van Nistelrooy (68 games).
January
The Noughties ended with Thierry Henry as the
Premier League's top scorer of the decade (169 goals) ahead of Robbie Keane (113), Michael Owen (102) and Frank Lampard (100).
The big freeze meant only seven professional football matches were played in England on Saturday, January 9. In total there were 48 postponements in England and Scotland over the weekend. The record was February 9, 1963, when 57 league matches in England and Scotland were frozen off.
Manchester United and Liverpool were
both knocked out of the FA Cup in the third round for the first time since 1958/59.
Wayne Rooney scored his
landmark 100th Premier League goal against Arsenal - and the strike was also notable because it took him past Cristiano Ronaldo in Manchester United's all-time goalscoring charts. What's more, Rooney did it in 24 fewer games than Ronaldo.
February
Manchester United benefitted from four own goals in two games against Portsmouth and Aston Villa. James Collins' mishap was the
10th own goal United had accrued. The previous Premier League record for an entire season was six!
Wayne Rooney scored two headers against West Ham, taking his record to seven headers in eight games. He would go on to score
eight in nine. Before that he had only scored four in his previous 342 career appearances.
Mark Schwarzer became only the
sixth goalkeeper to win the Premier League Player of the Month award. The previous winners were David Seaman, Tim Flowers (twice), Alex Manninger, Paul Robinson and Petr Cech.
March
Peter Crouch became the
20th man in history to score 20 goals for England in the Wembley friendly against Egypt.
Aston Villa's FA Cup victory against Reading was their
first ever win in the month of March under Martin O'Neill.
Manchester United's defeat to Bayern Munich
ended their run of 17 unbeaten away games in the Champions League. Their last defeat was the 2007 semi-final against AC Milan - and coincidentally the referee that day was Frank de Bleeckere, who officiated in Munich as well
Seventh-placed Aston Villa became the
third highest-placed team to concede seven goals in a Premier League game as they lost 7-1 at Stamford Bridge..
April
Federico Macheda made only his
second Premier League appearance at Old Trafford - and scored his second goal - but Manchester United still lost to Chelsea.
Lenny Sowah came on as a substitute for Portsmouth against Blackburn to become the
first Premier League player to have been born in the Premier League era. He was born on August 23, 1992 - eight days after the Premier League kicked off.
Tottenham's Huerelho Gomes saved two penalties from Sunderland's Darren Bent at the Stadium of Light. Bent has
only ever failed with one other Premier League penalty - and that was also saved by Gomes back in November!
Portsmouth's relegation was confirmed and Herman Hreidarsson equalled Nathan Blake's record for the
most relegations in Premier League history, having already gone down with Crystal Palace, Wimbledon, Ipswich Town and Charlton Athletic. He also became the first player to do so with five different clubs.
Lionel Messi became the sixth player to score
four goals in a Champions League game - at Arsenal's expense. The previous players were: Andriy Shevchenko, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Dado Prso, Simone Inzaghi and Marco van Basten.
May
David James was named in England's provisional World Cup squad. Only
three England players have previously been relegated and gone to a major tournament in the same summer - Ian Walker in 2004, Tony Dorigo in 1988 and Terry Butcher in 1986.
Chelsea's 8-0 victory against Wigan was their
biggest ever top division win, having surpassed the previous one from two weeks earlier against Stoke!
Chelsea became the
first team since 1963 to score more than 100 goals in the top flight and broke their own Premier League record of 97 goals in a season.
Chelsea also put seven past Sunderland, Aston Villa and Stoke this season.
No team has ever scored seven goals (or more) twice in the same Premier League season before, let alone four times.
Jose Mourinho became the
third man to win the Champions League with two different clubs. The others are Ernst Happel (Feyenoord and Hamburg) and Ottmar Hitzfeld (Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich).
