Let's take a look back at Glasgow City's and Rangers' journeys to Fir Park...

Where did it all begin?

In the first round of the Sky Sports Cup, eight SPWPL 2 teams entered. Livingston progressed with a convincing 4-0 victory over East Fife, while St Johnstone defeated the University of Stirling 5-2. The other two ties went beyond the 90 minutes with Gartcairn scoring an extra-time winner to come out on top against Boroughmuir Thistle, while Kilmarnock and Dundee United went the distance, with the Ayrshire side eventually triumphing 8-7 on penalty kicks.

The second round saw the top-flight clubs join the remaining sides in the competition, with 52 goals scored across the eight fixtures.

Rangers secured a dominant 12-0 win over SPWPL2 side St Johnstone, while Partick Thistle hit seven past Livingston. Edinburgh duo Hibernian and Hearts were the other big scorers of the round, Hibernian winning 9-0 over Motherwell and Hearts securing their place in the quarter-finals with a 7-0 victory over Montrose.

Aberdeen and Celtic both met lower league opposition, as they progressed with gritty 3-1 wins over Kilmarnock and Spartans respectively, while Glasgow City took another step towards the final with a convincing 5-0 win over Hamilton on the road and Queen's Park beat Gartcairn 3-1.

When we got to the last eight, the sole SPWPL 2 representatives, Queen's Park, saw their Sky Sports Cup journey come to an end, as Celtic secured an emphatic 9-1 victory.

The all-Edinburgh affair proved to be the tie of the round, with current top-flight champions, Hibernian, beating their city rivals Hearts 3-2 to earn the bragging rights.

Meanwhile, in the other two matches, the finalists continued to progress. Glasgow City secured their semi-final spot with a 2-0 victory over Aberdeen, before Rangers beat Partick Thistle 3-0 at Broadwood Stadium, in a rematch of the 2023/24 final.

Drama in the semi-finals

Hibernian and Glasgow City kicked off the semi-finals, as they met under the lights at Meadowbank Stadium. Nicole Kozlova opened the scoring for the visitors on the stroke of half-time before a stunning strike from Chloe Warrington put Leanne Ross' side 2-0 up just before the hour mark.

While last season's runners-up Hibs pulled a goal back five minutes later via Kirsten Reilly's free-kick, their battling effort proved to be in vain, as City progressed.

The other tie saw Rangers host rivals Celtic for the third season in a row at this stage of the competition.

Grant Scott's side opened the scoring through Maria McAneny before Katie Wilkinson levelled for Rangers from the penalty spot. Celtic reclaimed the lead just two minutes later via Emma Lawton and that advantage was doubled when Poppy Pritchard converted from the spot. However, goals from Laura Berry at the end of each half saw Rangers dramatically draw level before the final whistle.

More drama followed as Gers 'keeper Jenna Fife saved Saoirse Noonan's penalty in the second half of extra-time, meaning we went to spot kicks, where Fife impressed again, saving two Celtic efforts to send Rangers into a fourth successive Sky Sports Cup final.

This is potentially the closest Sky Sports Cup final to date. Rangers come into the fixture in search of a record-equalling fourth triumph in a row. Meanwhile, league leaders Glasgow City have only lost one domestic match this season - against Rangers - and will be aiming to earn a record-equalling seventh Sky Sports Cup crown.

The history books beckon.

Here's what happened when Glasgow City's Amy Muir and Rangers' Nicola Docherty faced some tough questions from North Kelvin Girls, ahead of Sunday's Sky Sports Cup final

Meetings in the league so far this season between the two sides have been too close to call. Back in September, it took a late winner from Nicole Kozlova to secure the three points for City. In January, it was Rangers' turn to strike late in the game, with Calliste Brookshire levelling for the Gers on what was her first start since joining the club. Meanwhile, last weekend, the late goals continued as Rangers won the fixture 1-0, thanks to Katie Wilkinson's penalty.

There have been plenty of memorable moments so far in the 2025/26 Sky Sports Cup, and all signs point towards the final producing a few more of its own.

There is still so much history to be written at Fir Park on Sunday.
