DC United and Montreal Impact booked their place in the MLS play-offs on the penultimate weekend of the regular season.
United moved up to fourth in the Eastern Conference with a 3-1 win over New York City FC, which was inspired by goals from Patrick Mullins, Bobby Boswell and Rob Vincent.
Montreal also secured a berth despite conceding a late equaliser in a 2-2 draw with Canadian rivals Toronto FC. Ignacio Piatti's double had twice put them in front, but Tosaint Ricketts levelled in the 86th minute to restrict Impact to a point.
However, that did not prove too costly as New England Revolution and Philadelphia Union both lost.
The Revolution lost 2-1 to Chicago Fire, while the Union were beaten 2-0 at Orlando City. Union will take the final play-off spot in the Eastern Conference with a point in next week's finale or if the Revolution fail to perform an 11-goal swing in goal difference.
Defending MLS champions Portland Timbers took their pursuit of a Western Conference play-off berth into the final weekend with a 1-0 win over Colorado Rapids.
They are now level on points with Sporting Kansas City, who drew 0-0 with Real Salt Lake City. City's place in the play-offs still hangs in the balance as does the Seattle Sounders', who were beaten 2-1 by FC Dallas.
New York Red Bulls are on course to top the Eastern Conference after they beat Columbus Crew 3-2, LA Galaxy beat Houston Dynamo 1-0 and San Jose Earthquakes and Vancouver Whitecaps played out a 0-0 draw.
