Zlatan Ibrahimovic named MLS newcomer of the year

LA Galaxy striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic has been named the MLS newcomer of the year for 2018.

The former Manchester United forward has enjoyed a successful debut season in the USA, with 22 goals and 10 assists in 27 appearances.

Despite his impact, Galaxy narrowly missed out on making the MLS playoffs after finishing seventh in the Western Conference, one point behind Real Salt Lake.

The award, which recognises players with previous professional experience but who are in their first year playing in MLS, is voted for by players, clubs and the media.

Ibrahimovic recorded an average of 36.36 per cent of votes, ahead of DC United's Wayne Rooney (32.25 per cent) and Los Angeles FC striker Carlos Vela (13.47 per cent). Former Derby County forward - now with Sporting Kansas City - Johnny Russell received 2.51 per cent of the vote.
