Conrad Logan saved two penalties as Hibernian advanced to the Scottish Cup Final with a 4-2 shootout victory over Dundee United following a 0-0 draw on Saturday.
Blair Spittal and Billy McKay both saw their spot kicks saved by Logan, leaving Jason Cummings to fire in the winning penalty.
Cummings had earlier missed a penalty for Hibs midway through the first half, while McKay spurned a number of opportunities for United throughout the match.
Both sides started the game in tentative fashion as players looked to assess conditions on the newly-laid pitch at Hampden Park.
After a nervy opening 10 minutes, Hibernian began to take control of the match and went close to an opener through Cummings, who failed to connect properly with a David Gray knockdown five yards out.
Fraser Fyvie, who won the English FA Cup with Wigan in 2013, then narrowly fired over from 25 yards before Gray once again caused panic inside the Dundee six-yard box with another headed knockdown.
United had failed to mount a serious attack midway through the first but almost took a shock lead when McKay shot straight at Logan after finding himself one-on-one with the debutant keeper.
Hibs responded immediately and were awarded a penalty on the half-hour mark when a Fyvie cross appeared to hit Coll Donaldson on the arm.
Cummings, who scored a penalty as Hibs knocked Dundee out of the League Cup earlier this year, stepped up and attempted a chipped Panenka, only to see it sail hopelessly over Eiji Kawashima's bar.
That miss almost proved to be costly just minutes later when McKay latched onto a loose ball just five yards out.
However, the 27 year-old striker, who appeared to be in an offside position when he received the ball, once again failed to beat Logan, who made a superb rushing save to keep the scores level heading into half time.
Alan Stubbs' side had dominated large periods of the first half and went close again shortly after the break when Cummings narrowly failed to connect with another Gray delivery from the right.
United's Ryan Dow then saw a deflected effort cleared off the line by Paul Hanlon. However, neither side was able to break the deadlock after 90 minutes, forcing extra-time.
Hibernian continued to dominate possession but it was Dundee United who came closest to a late winner when substitute Henri Anier, playing against his former club, failed to beat the impressive Logan from close range.
And it was the 29-year-old Irishman who proved to be the hero in the subsequent shootout - saving two spot kicks, leaving Cummings with the opportunity to atone for his earlier spot-kick error.
Hibernian now progress to the final where they will play either Celtic or Rangers, who face each other in the second semi-final on Sunday afternoon, live on Sky Sports.
