Title hopefuls slip to home defeat

Ajax blew the chance to close the gap on leaders AZ Alkmaar after suffering a 1-0 home defeat by Heerenveen. Victory for Ajax could have lifted them to within three points of AZ, but they came unstuck against fourth-placed Heerenveen at the Amsterdam ArenA. Thomas Vermaelen was sent off two minutes into the second half for Ajax and Heerenveen took advantage to score the only goal on 59 minutes through Danijel Pranjic. Groningen moved into fifth spot after a 1-0 win at ADO Den Haag courtesy of Gonzalo Garcia's 76th minute goal. NAC Breda drop a place as a result of Groningen's win, and their surprise 1-1 draw at home to bottom club Volendam. Joonas Kolkka put NAC into the lead on 64 minutes, but the strugglers levelled six minutes later through Rowin van Zaanen. Vitesse Arnhem climbed out of the bottom three places in the Eredivisie table after a 2-0 success at Willem II Tilburg. Mads Junker broke the deadlock on the hour mark before Ricky Wolfswinkel sealed the win with a second goal in injury-time.
