Craig Bellamy has told Sky Sports News he has withdrawn from negotiations with Oxford to become the club's manager.
Oxford United's new owner Sumrith Thanakarnjanasuth said Craig Bellamy was one of four candidates they were speaking to about the vacant manager's job.
Former Wales striker Bellamy is currently part of Neil Warnock's backroom staff at Cardiff City.
Thanakarnjanasuth took over last week with the club 15th in League One, six points above the bottom four.
Derek Fazackerley has been in temporary charge since Pep Clotet was sacked in January and has overseen one victory and one draw in the five Sky Bet League One games he has led the team for.
Former Arsenal, Tottenham and England defender Sol Campbell held initial talks with Oxford over the vacant role but was overlooked for the job.
Thanakarnjanasuth has set the long-term target of taking Oxford to the Premier League, but the first task for the new manager will be to steer the club clear of relegation to League Two.
Oxford face 20th-placed Fleetwood Town on Saturday at the Kassam Stadium.
