Lions sign promising Canadian

Millwall have signed Canadian international midfielder Josh Simpson to a two-year contract with the South East London club.

Millwall have signed Canadian international midfielder Josh Simpson.

The 21-year-old arrives at The Den after impressing Lions player-manager Dennis Wise during the club's pre-season tour of Canada last month.

Simpson played for the Canada 'B' side against Millwall in a pre-season tournament and his performances against them and Scottish Premier League side Hearts alerted Wise to his promising abilities.

The Victoria, British Columbia-native has been seen as an emerging talent in the Canadian international ranks, having been a key member of his country's Under-20 side that performed beyond expectations at last year's World Youth Championships in the United Arab Emirates.

His move to Millwall brings the youngster into the professional game, having played his football recently for the University of Portland in the United States.

Simpson, who has signed a two-year deal, told the club's official website of his delight in joining the Championship club for the new season.

"This is a dream come true for me," Simpson said. "I'm really looking forward to the challenge and hope that I get a chance to play in front of the Millwall fans as soon as possible."

The signing of Simpson ends some frustration in the transfer market for Wise, who claimed that the delay in Tim Cahill's departure to Everton hampered their chances of adding new faces.

"Barry Hayles was one of them while Les Ferdinand and Tim Sherwood were certain players we tried to get," Wise told Sky Sports News.

"Unfortunately, with the financial side of it, we couldn't give them the money they wanted because we needed to sell Tim and bring the money in before we could spend it."
