Mariners sign Newey

Grimsby Town have signed former Cambridge United midfielder Tom Newey.

Grimsby Town have signed former Cambridge United midfielder Tom Newey on a one-year deal.

The former Leeds United and Leyton Orient man finished last season with The U's, but was unable to prevent them from relegation to The Conference.

The 22-year-old (pictured) was one of 12 players to be released by the Abbey Stadium outfit last month and with Mariners boss Russell Slade in need of a left-sided player, Newey was pleased to secure a move to Blundell Park.

"It is great to have got sorted," Newey told Grimsby's official website. "I know a couple of the lads, which always helps."

Newey joins Steve Mildenhall, Jermaine Palmer, Gary Cohen, John Lukic, Terry Barwick and Paul Bolland as Slade's new additions this close season, with the Grimsby boss continuing to look at more fresh faces for next term.

One of those new faces is former Scunthorpe United midfielder Wayne Graves, who has been handed a trial by the League Two club.

Graves was one of three players to be released by Iron manager Brian Laws last month, but the 24-year-old will now have the chance to earn a contract with the Humberside club.

"We are looking at him and we will give him a chance to impress in the pre-season games," added Slade.
