Reyna eyes US return

Claudio Reyna says that he plans to return to America next year.

Claudio Reyna says that he plans to return to America when his current Manchester City contract expires next year.

The 32-year-old signed a one-year contract extension back in January to extend his stay at Eastlands into a fourth season.

Reyna says that by that time he will be ready to return home after spending 12 years in European football.

"I would love to play in the USA before I retire," said Reyna.

"Moving home is one of the obvious attractions but it is also the chance to play in front of my family and friends.

"When you join a club in Europe, you get attached to it and give everything for it.

"But I look around and see team-mates who need to find 10 or 20 tickets for every game. I am the first one they turn to because I hardly ever need them.

"It is a position I would really like to be in."

Reyna moved to Europe after the 1994 World Cup in his homeland, and will be one of the few players to have played in four finals when USA kick-off their Germany 2006 campaign against Czech Republic on Monday.

Since Reyna moved away he says that football has been on the up and up back home in America.

"When I first moved to Germany from the States, the bigger countries used to look upon us as a bit of a joke," added Reyna.

"It wasn't particularly the team, just the fact the game did not carry any weight in our country.

"Football in the USA was nothing. In some ways the critics had a point because we did not even have a professional league, which doesn't say much.

"But soccer has made huge steps since 1994, not only in terms of the Major League Soccer concept but also the number of players coming through and the excitement factor and tension surrounding the team.

"When I came into the national squad before the 1994 World Cup we would play friendlies when only 10,000 or 15,000 would turn up.

"Now, there are at least 25,000 in the stadium, the matches are always live on TV and the media presence has quadrupled."
