Alex Cairns has played down his heroic triple save in Fleetwood's win over Northampton

Fleetwood goalkeeper Alex Cairns says it's too early for the club to be targeting promotion despite their impressive start to the season.

The Trawlermen sit fourth in the Sky Bet League One table after winning their opening two games, with Cairns making an incredible triple save during last Saturday's 1-0 win over Northampton.

"We need to take each game as it comes," Cairns told Sky Sports News. "We're delighted with the start we've got but we understand there's a game next weekend [against Wimbledon] that we need to get three points from."

Cairns says he was just doing his job in denying Northampton duo Billy Waters and Aaron Pierre but has been taken aback by the reaction.

"I saw the cross coming in and got into my position," he said. "I managed to save the first one, then realised the ball was still in play so had to scramble across and make the second save, then the third one.

"My friends and family were all ringing me on Monday. I just said I'm glad I'm doing my job in keeping the ball out of the net.

"How many times have I looked back at it? Once or twice, I'm not going to lie! I'm delighted with the saves but more importantly, the three points."

Fleetwood goalkeeping coach David Lucas says Cairns' plaudits are well deserved.

"We work for hours and hours on the training field, hoping to get a few of those moments in a season," he said.

"It has paid off. The goalkeepers train like demons every day; you get your just rewards at the end of it."
