Mark O'Brien scored a dramatic winner for Newport County as they completed a great escape to avoid relegation from the Football League

Newport County came back from the brink on the final day of the season to secure their League Two status in dramatic circumstances.

The Exiles, who were 11 points adrift in March, looked to be heading down as they were drawing 1-1 against Notts County late in the game.

Their relegation rivals Hartlepool had come from behind to lead 2-1 against Doncaster Rovers, meaning they looked set to stay in the division.

However, Mark O'Brien scored an 89th-minute winner for Newport to spark wild celebrations in south Wales.

The victory saw Newport finish third from bottom in League Two, two points above Hartlepool, who were relegated from the Football League for the first time in their history.

And it completed a remarkable turnaround for Newport as they won seven of their last 12 matches to stay up.
