Spurs full-back joins for six-figure fee
Colchester United have snapped up Phil Ifil for a potential club record fee from Tottenham Hotspur.
The Championship club had broken their transfer record by signing Chris Coyne from Luton Town for a sum in the region of £350,000 earlier on Thursday.
The U's have now brought in promising full-back Ifil for an undisclosed six-figure fee, which could eventually surpass the fee paid for Coyne.
Ifil had spent three months on loan at Southampton this season, with George Burley having been keen on a deal to re-sign the defender.
But the 21-year-old has opted for a permanent move to Layer Road having failed to make an impact with Spurs.
He made five first-team appearances during his time at White Hart Lane - the last of which was against Wigan Athletic last April.
