Midfielder looking to make impact under new management
Simon Gillett has ended any doubts about his future by signing a new contract at Southampton.
The midfielder appeared to be on his way out of St Mary's in January after being told he could leave by then-manager George Burley.
But, after making two substitute appearances under Burley's successor Nigel Pearson, Gillett has now been handed a deal by new boss Jan Poortvliet.
The 22-year-old has accepted a two-year contract, with the option of a further 12 months, and is happy to be staying with the Championship club.
Very glad
"I am really pleased to have signed a new contract," Gillett told the club's
official website.
"It is two years with a one-year option and now it is up to me to make the breakthrough.
"I have always said I wanted to make it with Southampton, but there was a time when I wondered if I would have to move on to get first-team football.
"I was not involved under George Burley who said I could go in January. There were clubs who wanted me, but I decided to stay - and now I am very glad I did."
Since making his Saints debut in January 2006, Gillett has been out on loan to Blackpool, Bournemouth and Yeovil Town.
