Zola on fire as top flight new boys are thumped

Premier League new boys Hull City came crashing down to earth at League One Crewe as they came away from Gresty Road with a 4-0 thumping. On his home debut Calvin Zola proved unplayable, as he hit a hat-trick, with Nicky Maynard also on target. Zola put Alex ahead in the second minute from close range, before the same player hit a 25-yard shot into the net just a minute later. The Tigers had a chance to get back into the game but Bernard Mendy saw his penalty - awarded for a foul on Nick Barmby - saved by Steve Collis. The hosts took a three-goal lead when Maynard hit home an unstoppable penalty, with Zola completing the scoring before half-time with another spot-kick after Mendy had conceded both penalties. City boss Phil Brown sent on a completely new XI in the second half but the damage had been done.
