Premier League: Southampton's Ronald Koeman reflects on injury misfortunes at Arsenal

Southampton boss Ronald Koeman felt his side were worthy of a point after seeing them fall to a last-gasp 1-0 defeat at Arsenal.

The Saints produced a fine defensive display, with keeper Fraser Forster in outstanding form, but they were undone by an 89th-minute goal by Alexis Sanchez, the Chile striker again proving to be Arsenal's spark with his ninth Premier League goal of the season.

And Koeman was left to lament a series of injuries his side suffered in north London, Toby Alderweireld going down with a hamstring injury seven minutes from time to leave them to finish with 10 men.

Jack Cork had to be replaced in the first half with an ankle injury and Dusan Tadic limped off with a groin problem after the interval.

Unlucky

I was proud of the spirit we showed, the reaction after last game. We played good football and we created some good opportunities but it wasn’t enough. We were really unlucky.

"For the first hour we were outstanding and our team gave a very good reaction after the loss last Sunday," Koeman said.

"We were unlucky with the injuries and that gave Arsenal the motivation to bring more in the last 10 minutes, pressing with 11 players against 10 players.

"Toby couldn't play on. If it's a kick on the ankle you can ask them to play on, but it was a hamstring problem. You can't continue with a hamstring injury.

“Jack is the same ankle as last season, we have to wait until tomorrow to know something more. Toby is hamstring, for how long I don’t know

"Our goalkeeper Fraser Forster was outstanding but it wasn't enough to keep a clean sheet.

“I was proud of the spirit we showed, the reaction after the last game. We played good football and we created some good opportunities but it wasn’t enough. We were really unlucky.

“I think we had a good reaction after last Sunday. Our ball possession was much better, we controlled the game and I think we had some good opportunities.

“I think the best was in the first half for Graziano (Pelle). After one hour it was more difficult but Fraser was outstanding in the second half, he was the difference."
