Stoke boss Mark Hughes praised the audacity of Charlie Adam after his 64-yard goal against Chelsea, but rued his side’s missed chance of picking up a first point at Stamford Bridge in 21 years.
Stoke fell behind to a 39th minute Eden Hazard penalty but were back on level terms thanks to a moment of brilliance from Adam.
The Scottish midfielder picked up the ball deep in his own half before powering a long-range strike over Thibaut Courtois and into the net to bring the scores level going into the break.
And Hughes praised Adam’s technical ability in scoring what has been described as one of the best goals in Premier League history.
"It was an outrageous attempt and thankfully it's gone in," Hughes said. "At the time I wasn't quite sure what he was attempting, but it became very clear.
"Fantastic vision and technical ability to beat a goalkeeper of Courtois' quality from that distance."
However, it was not enough to stop Chelsea as Loic Remy fired his side’s winner after a horrendous mistake from goalkeeper Asmir Begovic.
But Hughes failed to criticise the Bosnia and Herzegovina international, who pulled off a string of fine saves before his error to keep his side in the game.
"On the day he had a fantastic performance," Hughes added.
"That was his one mistake, and Chelsea had the ability and talent to capitalise on it.
"When they get in a winning position, it's usually very difficult to stop them."
