Debuts galore for Latics as Gerrard returns to Boundary Park

Oldham Athletic will give debuts to a raft of new signings, while former Latics keeper Paul Gerrard will be on the bench for Stockport County. New Latics boss Dave Penney has enjoyed a remarkable recruitment drive this summer which has taken the number of new faces at Boundary Park well into double figures. Midfielder Rob Purdie joined on a free transfer from Darlington but remains sidelined due to a stomach injury which has required surgery. Joe Jacobsen arrived on a free transfer from Bristol Rovers but is currently troubled by a hernia and will similarly play no part. However, the likes of Jon Worthington, Pawel Abbott, Dean Furman, Dean Brill, Andy Holdsworth, Keigan Parker, Rene Steer are Phil Ojapah are available. Alex Marrow this week joined on loan from Blackburn and striker Darren Byfield, left-back Peter Gilbert and goalkeeper Przemyslaw Kazimierczak penned short-term deals.

      Stockport news

Stockport boss Gary Ablett is expected to name goalkeeping coach Gerrard on the bench for the trip to their derby rivals. The 36-year-old former Latics favourite joined Ablett's coaching staff earlier this summer and will also act as understudy to Owain fon Williams. Gerrard, whose last club was Sheffield United, made his Premier League debut for Oldham at the age of 19 and moved to Everton for £1million in 1996. He has made over 350 career appearances and his availability is a welcome boost to Ablett after no new signings were made this summer. Ablett has no injury or suspension concerns but he admits highly-rated defender Josh Thompson, 18, could be heading to Celtic, saying: "He's got a massive decision to make."
