Erin Cuthbert kept Chelsea Women's Champions League hopes alive as she dragged them back into their semi-final first leg with Lyon.

The Blues suffered a 2-1 first leg defeat in France, but retain hope ahead of next Sunday's return at Kingsmeadow thanks to Scotland international Cuthbert's second-half strike.

Emma Hayes' side fell behind in front of a crowd of 22,911 when defender Magdalena Eriksson inadvertently deflected Delphine Cascarino's shot past goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger.

But they looked to be in deep trouble after Amandine Henry handed five-time winners Lyon a 2-0 lead before the break.

Chelsea's fortunes did not improve on the stroke of half-time when, after Ramona Bachmann had been brought in the box down by Eugenie Le Sommer, Fran Kirby saw her penalty saved by Sarah Bouhaddi.

However, the visitors finally grabbed a lifeline when Cuthbert fired in a fine half-volley from substitute Beth England's knock-down to blow the tie wide open.
