Oxford United remain without Marcus Browne and Jamie Mackie for the visit of holders Manchester City in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night.

Midfielder Browne has a knee problem while forward Mackie could be sidelined for up to six weeks with a hip injury.

The third-round tie will also come too soon for Samir Carruthers and Simon Eastwood while Rob Hall (knee) is a long-term absentee. Oxford are struggling in League One after losing six of their nine matches.

City are set to make a raft of changes to the side that thrashed Cardiff in the Premier League at the weekend. Brazilian defender Danilo could make his first appearance of the season, having been sidelined since injuring his ankle at the World Cup, while fringe first-teamers Oleksandr Zinchenko and Brahim Diaz are set to be involved.

Nicolas Otamendi and Riyad Mahrez, who scored his first goals for City in Saturday's 5-0 win, may feature. Pep Guardiola is weighing up whether to hand a City debut to teenage goalkeeper Arijanet Muric.

    Opta stats

Oxford United haven't faced Manchester City since March 1998 in a second-tier match - the U's won 2-0 at Maine Road with goals from Jamie Cook and Joey Beauchamp.

Oxford and Man City have never met in the League Cup but have met once before in a cup competition - the Citizens won 5-2 in the FA Cup in January 1974, with City's goals that day coming from Rodney Marsh and two braces from Mike Summerbee and Denis Law.

This is Oxford's first third round League Cup match since November 2002, when they lost 3-0 against Aston Villa. They haven't reached the fourth round since the 1997-98 season.

Man City have won their last five League Cup third round ties since losing 4-2 to Aston Villa in September 2012, scoring 20 goals in those five games.

The holders of the League Cup haven't lost a tie against third tier opposition since October 1997, when Leicester City were beaten 3-1 by Grimsby Town.

Man City have failed to score in just four of their 17 domestic cup matches (League Cup and FA Cup) under Pep Guardiola - but three of the teams to stop them scoring have been from outside the top-flight (Huddersfield Town, Wolves and Wigan Athletic).

Reigning top-flight champions have progressed from 28 of their 29 League Cup ties against sides from the third tier or below - the only exception was Leeds United in 1974-75, who lost 3-0 to Chester City in the fourth round.

    Goodman's prediction

It almost doesn't matter what side Manchester City put out because they will still be expected to win this game comfortably.

It's a nice game for Oxford because they've got very little to lose, although Karl Robinson won't want to get an absolute smashing, which City are capable of delivering to anyone. This should be a very straightforward win for Pep Guardiola's side.

Don Goodman predicts: 0-4 (15/2 with Sky Bet)
