Rotherham vs Shrewsbury

HURST: ET WAS A FARCE
Shrewsbury boss Paul Hurst has congratulated Rotherham for their victory - but has called extra-time a "farce" and asked why an extra substitution wasn't allowed to be named.
"The game becomes a farce due to the heat and people cramping
up but that’s for both teams," he said in his press conference.
"You play 48 games and cup games and I know what the rules
are but maybe more subs could be allowed. It wasn’t a good ending to the game,
maybe adds to the drama for the neutral watching but u can’t really play how you’d
like, but congrats to Warney and everyone at Rotherham."
Richard Wood was the difference, says winning manager Paul Warne. Hard to argue.
THAT WINNING FEELING!
There’s ticker tape across the Wembley pitch. Rotherham are
celebrating their success with their fans after collecting their trophy. “New
York, New York” – a bit of a club anthem, bellows out across Wembley. A day
everyone in red will never forget – and they deserved it.
Joe Newell, who set up Richard Wood’s winner, gives us his
“I think we deserved it. We’ve played like that all year.
All the lads love each other, we fight for each other so I think we deserved it
today. My mouth’s been dry for the last three hours but it was good and it’s
all worth it obviously.”
Richard Wood has dedicated both his goals to his children,
who were watching from the stands with a homemade banner supporting their
"I’m speechless. It was terrible last season losing
every week. To turn it around like we have done, the manager deserves great
credit. What a guy he is and he has some great lads in the dressing room.
"We’ve gone all season and grown in confidence. For me
to get a brace is unheard of. I can see my children crying up in the stands and
that’s what it’s all about. I do it for them."
WARNE ON WOOD
“I call him my wrecking ball. On set pieces, he’s got the
desire. He’s an old school centre half, he’s prepared to break his nose for the
team and you need that desire. I thought his desire today in defending and
attacking was probably the difference.”
Here's the winning manager, speaking to Sky Sports.
“It’s been a good day at the office, but I’ll have more
sleepless nights thinking about playing teams like Aston Villa and others like
“I thought the lads were excellent, fairly play to Hursty
and Shrewsbury today, it was a right good game and we were toe-to-toe. I’m
really proud of the lads and the backroom staff and everyone at the club. It
was a horrendous 12 months last year for everyone so for all the fans that made
the effort to come down today, it has bene worth it.”
SIMEON GHOLAM AT WEMBLEY
Rotherham are back in the Sky Bet Championship! What a fantastic job Paul Warne has done to turn them around and get them moving back in the right direction.
Commiserations to Shrewsbury, though. They were in the automatic promotion race for so long this season but they just fell short at the wrong time. Their 29-year wait for second-tier football goes on.
ROTHERHAM 2-1 SHREWSBURY
FT: ROTHERHAM WIN PROMOTION TO THE SKY BET CHAMPIONSHIP! RICHARD WOOD THE HERO!
What a battle this was. Two committed teams in a final played in great spirit. Rotherham did deserve it - but still, relied on two goals from their centre-half and skipper. Wood could hardly walk at full-time such was the effort he put in.
120+1: Henderson punts a long ball towards Beckles at the back post. But it's overhit! Goal kick to Rotherham. That could be that.
120: TWO MINUTES ADDED ON!
119: PENALTY APPEAL...NOT GIVEN! Williams dances inside and into the box. Nsiala comes across him. No says the ref. Williams can't believe it.
118: Vaulks is clattered by Godfrey in midfield. He's down. Rotherham running down the clock. Still no response from Shrewsbury.
116: A bouncing ball almost drops to John-Lewis but Rodak is out quickly to mop up the danger.
114: FREE-KICK! Emmanuel fouls Payne down the left wing. Chance here to load the box for the Shrews - Whalley to deliver...
PUNCHED CLEAR! Rodak fists it's clear. No way through for the Shrews.
What a time for a first-career double for Richard Wood... five minutes for Rotherham to hold on.
112: Rodman is in the wars here. Bandaged up, he's now taken a knock. Looks like cramp. They've got no subs left.
110: John-Lewis tries to latch onto a flick on but Emmanuel sees the ball out. Shrewsbury lacking ideas here.
SUB! Final change. Forde is on. Newell, who grabbed the assist for what could be the winner, is off.
WATCH: WOOD MAKES IT 2-1
Here's how Richard Wood restored Rotherham's lead in extra-time...
108: Shrewsbury going direct now to Payne and John-Lewis. No success as yet.
106: HERE WE GO! Rotherham kick-off the second half of added time...
HT: That's half-time in extra-time. Can Rotherham hold on? Shrewsbury have 15 minutes.....
105: BLOCK! Whalley gets in behind down the right. He hooks a cross into the middle which Payne meets with a header. Guess who is there? The two-goal hero! Great defending.
Another Joe Newell set-piece, this time a free-kick, causing major problems for Shrewsbury and it's that man Richard Wood again with the goal to restore Rotherham's lead!
Shrewsbury have looked tired so far in extra-time and you have to wonder if they have the legs to haul themselves level again.
GOAL! ROTHERHAM 2-1 SHREWSBURY (Wood, 103)
UNBELIEVABLE! IT'S THE SKIPPER AGAIN - HE'S JUST BAGGED HIMSELF THE FREEDOM OF ROTHERHAM!
Newell whips in a classy left-footed set-piece that heads towards the back stick. Shrewsbury stop and stare as Wood attacks it with real venom. He controls his finish into the far corner - and then goes on a 70-yard celebration up the touchline!
ROTHERHAM 1-1 SHREWSBURY
101: SHOT! After a stoppage for the injury, Rotherham haul a throw into the box. It's cleared out to Towell.....he drags a tired shot well wide.
99: INJURY! Rodman is down after a clash of heads. He's got claret pouring out of a cut. The medics are on. However, Shrews have used all their subs. He'll need to soldier on.
He goes off to be bandaged up. He's going to carry on.
97: Godfrey explodes into life down the left. He tries to beat Emmanuel on the outside but the defender slides in to force it behind.
CORNER! It's sent towards the back post where Nsiala heads it back across goal...Ajayi clears.
95: SHOT! Smith goes up with Beckles, who just about forces it clear. It drops to Towell about 20 yards out but his effort is a tried one. Well wide.
93: Nervy start. Williams gets down the line and looks for Lavery at the back post but gets too much gas on the cross.
WATCH: HENDERSON'S SUPER SAVE
Here's how Shrewsbury goalkeeper Henderson denied Rotherham a late winner in normal time...
91: KICK-OFF! Extra-time is go, go, go!
FT: WE GO TO EXTRA-TIME! Amazing drama. These two can't be separated after 90 minutes. Wood's header was cancelled out by Rodman's splendid leveller. Both teams had chances but Rotherham really should have nicked it. Both Henderson, who saved a penalty, and Sadler have been exceptional for the Shrews. The two managers now have to rally their troops for another 30 minutes. Stay with us.
90+5: WHAT A SAVE!!!! Oh my goodness. Williams tricks his way down the right for Rotherham and it opens up for him. It's heading for the top corner but Henderson flings a hand towards it and flicks it over the crossbar. That has just saved their season - even the Rotherham fans are applauding!
90+4: Emmanuel boots on down the right but that man Sadler is there again, not once, but twice to slide in and clear. He's been a monster back there. Time is nearly up....
WATCH: SMITH GOES CLOSE
Michael Smith came close to nicking a late winner for Rotherham, but it wasn't to be. See the chance below...
90+2: Nsiala battles back to stop Williams down the right. Corner. Hold your breath....
CHANCE! In it comes. Sadler heads clear...but onto to Vaulks, who smacks one first time from 20 yards. SHANK! Miles wide.
90: FIVE ADDED MINUTES!
89: CHANCE! Corner to Rotherham - they look so dangerous from these. Towell swings one in with left - right on top of Henderson. Valuks comes charging in but a combination of Sadler and Godfrey do enough to deflect it over the bar!
It's getting too much for some... nail-biting stuff here at Wembley as we approach the end of normal time.
88: SAVE! Shrewsbury counter! Whalley somehow gets up the pitch from full-back and cuts inside. He lets fly.....Rodak gets down at full-stretch to smother. Breathless stuff.
87: SHOT! Only one team look like winning this in normal time. Rotherham work the extra man down the right and Williams tries to power one from a tight angle. That man again Henderson holds on!
86: WHAT A CHANCE! Smith slips in behind and just has Henderson to beat. He tries to go around him but clumsily tackles himself with the goal gaping! Henderson gets back to clear. Blimey.
84: Williams attacks down the right. His low cross is hooked clear by Sadler with Lavery sniffing. Great defending - again.
Rotherham coming on strong here.
82: A long ball is aimed at Smith, he wins it. Williams tries to get in down the right but Beckles - at fault for the goal - shows much better composure this time and ushers the attacker away.
79: You can feel then tension inside this stadium. One mistake could prove costly. Both sides playing very safe...
SHOT! John-Lewis wriggles free on the edge. He goes for the far corner but his shot is weak. Three yards wide.
77: CHANCE! Lavery again. Rotherham look the fitter side here. They come roaring forward and it opens up for him from 18 yards. He hits one....straight at Henderson! Waste.
74: WHAT A CHANCE! Mattock spots Lavery darting in behind down the left. He's in! It's a tight angle but he only has Henderson to beat. He tries to curl one into the far corner but gets it all wrong! Two yards wide. Oh dear.
73: SHOT! There are some tired legs out there. Newell finds himself in acres of space. He moves forward into space but is low shot is weak. Straight at Henderson.
SUB! Bolton's race is run. Riley is on. That's their final sub.
