An entertaining affair at the Veltins Arena saw Bundesliga champions Wolfsburg claim a 2-1 win over Schalke.
Wolfsburg travelled to Schalke trailing their hosts in third by four points but that gap has been cut to just one following Edin Dzeko's well taken brace.
An evenly contested first period saw both sides create chances but neither defence was breached before half-time.
It took Wolfsburg just ten minutes after the interval to open the scoring as Dzeko's close range header from Sascha Riether's delivery beat Manuel Neuer.
It was another header that restored parity as Schalke's Levan Kenia swung in a perfect cross for Benedikt Howedes to convert with ten minutes remaining.
Howedes' equaliser had Schalke level for less than a minute though, as Dzeko again breached the home side's rearguard to sweep in Makoto Hesebe's cross for a well taken winner.
Schalke pushed for an equaliser but the closest they came was when Kevin Kuranyi's close range header struck the post late on.
