Second-half goals from Lewin Nyatanga and Marley Watkins steered Barnsley into round two of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy in a comfortable 2-1 win at Scunthorpe.
Centre-back Nyatanga broke the deadlock in the 62nd minute with a looping effort over goalkeeper Luke Daniels from a right-wing set piece knocked high into the box.
Watkins then struck after 76 minutes, with an excellent close range finish after some good skills in the box to create himself the opening.
In between Sam Winnall also went close for the Tykes with a shot that was turned away at full stretch by Daniels.
With leading marksman Paddy Madden left on the bench for the first hour, the home side had little attacking threat to trouble keeper Nick Townsend. And by the time he came on it was too late to save the home side from another defeat against Barnsley who knocked them out of the Capital One Cup three weeks ago.
Scunthorpe did reduce the arrears in stoppage time when centre-back Charlie Goode fired home from a corner but by then it was only a consolation goal.
