Hooper, Hurst and Hayes goals sink Bulls

Scunthorpe moved into the last play-off berth with a comfortable 3-0 defeat of Hereford. The hosts - registering only their second win in nine games - did the damage with two goals in the opening 19 minutes. Leading marksman Gary Hooper netted the first after seven minutes with his 26th goal of the season, firing an angled shot past goalkeeper Peter Gulasci. Hooper then set up winger Kevan Hurst for his second goal in successive home games 12 minutes later. Hereford's hopes of getting back into the game disappeared just before half time when striker Fabian Brandy, on loan from Manchester United, had an excellent shot turned away at full stretch by goalkeeper Joe Murphy. Scunthorpe dominated the second half, missing a number of chances before striker Paul Hayes finally made it 3-0 in the 79th minute rounding off a flowing attacking move with his 16th goal of the season. The visitors had little to offer in reply and it was Scunthorpe who might have struck again in the closing stages with Hayes and midfield man Brent McCann both going close.
