Cheltenham are in to the second round of the Carling Cup after a 1-0 win against Southend.
Steve Tilson's side fall at the first hurdle
Cheltenham avenged their first round Carling Cup defeat at the hands of Southend in 2007 thanks to Ben Gill's goal in extra time giving them a 1-0 win.
Southend came closest to scoring in normal time but Kevin Betsy was denied by a double save from Shane Higgs.
Alex Russell set up the winner when he picked up Alan Wright's pass on the left and crossed to the far post where Gill stooped to head home in off the right upright five minutes from time.
Southend twice came close to equalising from Peter Clarke headers but were unable to force a penalty shootout.
