Robbie Simpson was Brentford's match-winner as they proved too strong for Stevenage in their JPT first round clash, winning 1-0.

The Huddersfield loan striker scored the only goal of an entertaining contest at the Lamex Stadium on Tuesday night. A clinical 28th-minute header from the 25-year-old striker was the difference between the two sides as he made it three goals in his last three games. It was also Simpson's fourth goal of the season as the League One Bees bounced back from Saturday's 3-1 defeat to Rochdale, while League Two outfit Boro slipped to their first defeat in three matches. Having soaked up a barrage of pressure in the opening exchanges, Nicky Adam's crossed for Simpson to power a head past host keeper Chris Day. Adams also had a shot saved by Day, but ironically it was Boro who were the better of the two sides as they dominated. Brentford keeper Richard Lee was forced to produce a string of good saves, the first from Mark Roberts' seventh minute strike. Lee also saved well from John Mousinho, Yemi Odubade - on two occasions - and Peter Winn. Simpson was denied a second goal after another good block from Lee, while Odubade also twice shot over as Graham Westley's team failed to find the back of the net.
