Chamberlain nets crucial goal against Austria

Elliott Chamberlain was the hero as Wales U21s edged out their Austrian counterparts 1-0. Both sides were looking for a positive response after failing to make it through to next year's European Championship despite spirited qualifying campaigns. A crowd of just 1041 braved a chilly evening in Newport but were not treated to much action during a scrappy 90 minutes. Both managers fielded experimental line-ups as they already looked ahead to the next qualification campaign, which begins after the draw is made in February. The hosts settled quickest with Southampton's Ryan Doble forcing a save from Austria goalkeeper Heinz Lindner in the 21st minute. Wales boss Brian Flynn made three changes at the break and the momentum quickly switched to the visitors, with David Stephens required to make a great tackle to deny Deni Alar a shooting chance. But it looked like the game would end goalless until Chamberlain popped up with the winner for Flynn's side with 16 minutes remaining. Leicester youngster Chamberlain fired home with his first touch just moments after coming on as a substitute, following great work by Jonathan Williams.
