Savage header boosts bid for promotion

Striker Bas Savage scored the priceless winner that sent Tranmere up into the League One play-off zone with a 1-0 win at Walsall. The goal was set up by former Walsall winger Eddy Sonko, who sent in a perfect cross to the far post where Savage headed in. It was no more than Tranmere deserved because only some great saves by Saddlers goalkeeper Rene Gilmartin had kept them out until the 79th-minute winner. Walsall had the first real chance in the 19th minute when recalled striker Michael Ricketts struck the crossbar with a close-range volley from Sofiene Zaaboub's cross. Three minutes later Charlie Barnett put Ian Moore clear, but Gilmartin stretched out a leg to keep out his shot and on the stroke of half-time Gilmartin pulled off another fine save to deny Ian Goodison, whose fierce volley from 15 yards looked a certain goal. Walsall livened up in the second half, but Danny Coyne saved comfortably from Troy Deeney and Jabo Ibehre, while Tranmere missed a great chance in the 75th minute when Antony Kay headed wide from Moore's cross.
