Bournemouth missed out on a chance to climb into a top four as the Cherries came from behind to draw 2-2 with West Ham.

The Hammers had made the perfect start as Callum Wilson haunted his former club with two first-half goals, before Andoni Iraola's side fought back with a dominant second-half display.

A Marcus Tavernier penalty and an immediate impact from substitute Enes Unal salvaged a point for the hosts, but it would have been all three if not for an inspired performance from West Ham goalkeeper Alphonse Areola.

Team news

Bournemouth were without Antoine Semenyo due to injury, with Andoni Iraola making four changes to the team that lost to Aston Villa prior to the international break.

West Ham switched to a back five as they made two changes from their 3-2 win over Burnley. Lucas Paqueta missed the trip to the Vitality Stadium due to suspension, while 19-year-old Luis Guilherme made his first start of the season.

Bournemouth were without Antoine Semenyo through injury, and having failed to show the same impetus in attack without him, were punished by an all too familiar face.

A long ball from Areola was brought down well by Wilson who fired through the arms of the oustretched Djordje Petrovic to give the visitors the lead. The forward doubled his tally shortly after with another fine finish from close range as he continued his chase to join the Premier League 100 club.

The second half was as one-sided as you could get. Nuno Espirito Santo's decision to take Wilson off early in the half left the Hammers with no outlet in attack and Bournemouth's sustained pressure eventually paid off.

Marcus Tavernier smashed a penalty past Areola to pull one back, before Enes Unal equalised in his second game back from a serious knee injury within 55 seconds of coming on the pitch.

The hosts had the momentum and looked certain to walk away with all three points, but Areola produced several stunning saves to hand a floundering Irons a crucial point despite Bournemouth accumulating an xG of 4.08.

'Bad point despite comeback'

Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola lamented his side's poor finishing which meant that the comeback draw was a "bad point" in his eyes.

The Cherries' 4.08 xG is second only to Crystal Palace's 4.44 against them in the Premier League this season and the Spaniard was left frustrated with the lack of clinical edge in the final third.

"I think we've been much better than West Ham," Iraola said. "I think even in the first half we conceded two goals, but we were not worse than West Ham.

"Now because you're losing 2-0 they will say, 'No, first half is for West Ham'. No, first half we've been better than West Ham, but we conceded two goals that we shouldn't have conceded.

"But in the second half we've been miles better than West Ham and we had so many chances that for us it's a bad point."

'Time to improve away form' claims Espirito Santo

Despite making it three games unbeaten, it is just the second point away from home Nuno Espirito Santo has picked up as West Ham boss.

The Portuguese coach expressed the importance of improving the club's away form and admitted that their 2-0 lead would've been the perfect chance to do that.

"We managed to achieve a barrier at the London Stadium, we achieved a win. Now let's try to improve our away form," he said.

"Today was a good chance. You can look, OK, it slipped away from our hands. But I'm positive because the effort of the players was there.

"We were punished the same way we punished Bournemouth, they punished us. And it's very tough."

Redemption for Unal following injury

Enes Unal was the hero off the bench for Bournemouth, completing a full-circle moment in the process.

The Turkish striker scored a stunning 90th-minute free-kick to level for Bournemouth in the same fixture last season, but was sidelined soon after with a second ACL injury.

"Everyone is so happy and so pleased when these things happen," Iraola said post-match.

"Ten months fighting almost alone, with the physios, but you have been through difficult moments with a small pain, with the knee swelling and you start and then you have to stop.

"Also, as it's a second ACL in the same knee, it's a process he knows very well.

"Everyone was so happy for him because if we can put him close to the box Enes is a great finisher.

"Also he had a chance to score a third one. He didn't score, but we are very happy because in a moment where we've lost important offensive players, to recover Enes is good."

Nuno throws away hat-trick of wins with passive substitutions

Nuno Espirito Santo's changes proved costly for West Ham

Analysis from Sky Sports' Callum Bishop:

At half-time, you’d have thought that it would take a lot for West Ham to throw away their two-goal advantage at the Vitality.

Bournemouth looked shellshocked by a combination of the treacherous conditions and the Callum Wilson suckerpunch that put them at a disadvantage.

However, Nuno Espirito Santo’s decision to take off the goalscorer proved to be a costly one. Wilson’s two goals were underpinned by brilliant centre-forward play. Holding off a defender before bringing the ball down with his chest.

Even with the towering Tomas Soucek as his replacement, now there was no one leading the line to give the Hammers any respite when they cleared their lines.

As a result, the second half was the definition of one-way traffic. Even when the Cherries were thwarted by the incredible Alphonse Areola, they would come back moments later as Areola’s team-mates handed possession back over.

In many ways, Areola’s performance was a match-winning one given that the hosts accumulated such a high xG. However, the fact it didn’t lead to the Hammers picking up their third win in a row is down to their head coach leaving them in the lurch with his changes.
