Burton 2-1 Wolves: Cauley Woodrow strikes last-gasp winner

Cauley Woodrow notched a 94th-minute winner for Burton as they beat Wolves 2-1, the Brewers' first victory in six games at the Pirelli Stadium.

The Fulham loanee marked his home debut with a clinical finish, turning sharply in the box to score after Matt Palmer's corner had been helped on by Tom Flanagan.

Former Wolves winger Michael Kightly had earlier capped a man-of-the-match performance by bagging a valuable equaliser against his former side to silence the visitors, who had taken a first-half lead through Helder Costa's penalty.

Wolves had been restricted to long-range efforts in the first half with both George Saville and Nouha Dicko wayward with their efforts and Fulham loan pair Lasse Vigen Christensen and Woodrow going close for Albion.

Christensen's first-time effort dipped over the bar from a Tom Flanagan cross, while Woodrow's header from substitute Tom Naylor's centre landed in the arms of Wolves goalkeeper Carl Ikeme.

Marvill Sordell probably had Albion's best chance of the opening period. A poor clearance from Conor Coady fell at the feet of the former Watford striker, but he lost his footing at the vital moment, scuffing a tame effort goalwards.

Wolves took the lead five minutes before half-time through Costa, who completed a £13m permanent switch to Molineux last month. The Portuguese blasted high into the roof of the net from the spot after referee Keith Stroud adjudged Burton goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin had bundled into Wolves skipper Dave Edwards as both tried to meet a deep cross from Saville.

It looked at that point as if it might be another fruitless afternoon for Nigel Clough's men. But the Brewers enjoyed a purple patch early in the second half and found themselves level on the hour mark. Kightly, signed on loan from Burnley minutes before the January transfer deadline, forced two excellent saves from Ikeme but the Wolves stopper was powerless as Kightly tapped home Sordell's cross.

Stroud had earlier denied penalty shouts from both sides. Kortney Hause seemingly nudged Woodrow over inside the box and Derby loanee Andreas Weimann went down under an aerial challenge from Flanagan, but neither incident persuaded the official to point to the spot.

With the scores level, it was Albion who were pressing more for the winner and it arrived deep in stoppage time.

Having proved vulnerable themselves late on in games, throwing away numerous points in added-on time, Burton provided the killer blow on 94 minutes thanks to Woodrow's neat strike which kept the hosts three points above the Sky Bet Championship relegation zone.

Burton boss Nigel Clough:

"It's about time we had one go in our favour. We have had enough heartaches to last us three seasons in the first 20-odd games. It's about the first time anything has really broken for us in the last minute in the penalty area. The corner has come in and just dropped to two of our lads and Cauley has ended up putting it in.

"The two new lads get the goals and it makes a difference when you can bring a few bodies in during January. We have created a few chances throughout the season but it's nice now to have people who can finish them off."

Wolves boss Paul Lambert:

"It was never a pitch for us to get the ball down and play decent football but I'm not making that an excuse. We have been on a good run recently and I suppose it was going to happen sometime that we would come down from the level we reached against Liverpool.

"We never looked in any trouble in the first half but we never got going after the interval and we need to defend better than we did at the end."
