Real Madrid reached the Copa del Rey quarter-finals despite a 1-0 defeat to Leganes in the second leg of their last-16 tie on Wednesday.

Madrid led 3-0 from the first leg at the Santiago Bernabeu, but Martin Braithwaite reduced the deficit (30) from close range at the Estadio Municipal de Butarque.

Brahim Diaz had a glorious chance to score his first goal in Madrid colours following his move from Manchester City in the dying moments, but Ivan Cuellar tipped his fierce shot onto the post.

Middlesbrough-loanee Braithwaite sparked hopes of an improbable comeback with Solari fielding a weakened side after a convincing win in the first leg but it meant a rare start for the out-of-favour Isco.

After the midfielder showed his rustiness in failing to get a shot away, it was the hosts who broke the deadlock on the half-hour mark as Braithwaite reacted fastest to his own header striking the post to scramble the ball over the line.

Keylor Navas prevented a nervy finish with a string of fine late saves from Braithwaite as Madrid progressed to the last eight.

"We lost but we are through," Casemiro said after the loss. "There are no easy games and they pressed us. We are not in our best form and we are still fighting in all competitions.

Santiago Solari's side are 10 points adrift of Barcelona in La Liga but they received another boost to their hopes of domestic silverware as Atletico Madrid crashed out of the Copa on away goals following a 3-3 draw to Girona at the Wanda Metropolitano.
