Burton Albion have signed striker Luke Varney on an 18-month deal after he cancelled his contract with Ipswich Town.
The 34-year-old has spent most of his professional career in the Sky Bet Championship and worked alongside Brewers boss Nigel Clough when the pair were at Derby County.
Varney came into the Football League in 2003 with Crewe Alexandra and has played for Charlton, Derby, Sheffield Wednesday (loan), Blackpool (loan), Portsmouth, Leeds and Blackburn (loan) before joining Ipswich in early 2015.
He had made 15 Championship appearances this season, and scored three goals, although most of his playing time had come off the bench.
Clough said: "He's a good, experienced Championship player who we hope will help us out in the second half of the season. He plays a few different positions, wide midfield or up front and we know Luke from our time at Derby.
"He's featured for Ipswich this season and got a couple of goals as well but wanted to come back to the area and he will be a good addition to our squad.
"He gives us something different to what we have got and is a good signing for us at this stage. He only signed a six-month deal at Ipswich which is why he is available in January."
Ipswich agreed to release Varney from his contract, which was due to run out on January 12, so he could join Burton and be available for their first game in the FA Cup, which comes against Watford in the third round on Saturday.
