Six weeks out for Oldham playmaker

Oldham have been dealt a blow with the news that Neil Kilkenny's injury is worse than initially feared.

The former Birmingham playmaker had been expected to be out for a couple of weeks after undergoing a scan on his troublesome thigh injury.

However, Kilkenny has now been informed that he will require at least six weeks out of action as he has torn his thigh muscle.

"I've been told I will be out for six to eight weeks, but hopefully I can get back before then," he told the club's official website.

"But obviously I don't want to rush back and then have to pull out again injured, so we'll see how it goes.

"They originally said three weeks but I went for the scan the other day and that showed a tear in the thigh muscle right from the top to near the bottom."

Meanwhile, Oldham have cancelled 24-year-old Neil Wood's contract by mutual consent.

Wood, who is currently recovering from a serious knee injury, was allowed to depart with a view to finding a new club following the close of the transfer window.
