Aston Villa midfielder Gary Gardner has been handed a new three-year contract.

The 23-year-old, who is currently sidelined through injury, has made 18 first-team appearances for Tim Sherwood's side.

Gardner has been with Villa since the age of seven and spent time on loan with Championship sides Brighton and Nottingham Forest last season.

He told the Villa website: "I am delighted to sign this new deal and extend my time with this great club.

"I am looking forward to working with the gaffer going forward and being someone he can turn to, who will do a job for the team.

"I enjoyed my time on loan but now I'm determined to make an impact this season with Villa and show everyone what I am capable of."
