Southend United insist their players have been paid and that their match against Tranmere Rovers on Saturday will go ahead after fears of a strike over unpaid wages.

Shrimpers players met with the Professional Footballers' Association on Friday morning and it's hoped a resolution has now been reached.

A report in the Daily Mail suggested players and staff were threatening not to take part in the League One clash.

The EFL insists it is monitoring the situation as things unfold.

If the fixture is cancelled, the club would almost certainly face punishment. In recent months, similar cases involving Macclesfield and Bolton were referred to an independent disciplinary commission by the EFL. Both clubs received a points deduction.
