Former Olympiakos manager Marco Silva has been appointed as Hull's new head coach following the sacking of Mike Phelan on Tuesday.

Phelan was axed less than three months after taking charge on a permanent basis, with Hull's owners - who said they were seeking a "fresh direction" - moving quickly to name his successor.

The Tigers confirmed on Thursday morning that Silva would take charge until the end of the season, with vice-chairman Ehab Allam declaring it a "bold and exciting appointment."

But who is the new man in the Hull hotseat? Here are some key facts about the Portuguese coach, who will take charge of his first game in Saturday's FA Cup tie against Swansea.

Silva has flourished as the underdog before

In his first job in football management at Estoril, Silva won an unlikely promotion to the top flight. He also won the league manager of the year award.

Few gave him and his players a chance of competing against the likes of Porto and Sporting Lisbon. However, Silva guided Estoril to fifth in the Primeira Liga, securing the side a Europa League spot for the first time in their history.

He has a big Premier League scalp on his CV

Silva is perhaps best known on these shores for masterminding a 3-2 success at Arsenal in the Champions League group stage when boss of Olympiakos.

The Greek champions - who had lost their previous 12 games against English opposition away from home - ran out winners to ensure a worst ever start to the competition for Arsenal.

The Greeks counter attacked with great intensity and defied their previous efforts in European away days against Premier League teams. This was a side that had previously scored a grand total of three goals in 12 previous visits to England.

A bullish Silva said after the match: "We were never scared, even when Arsenal scored. We always respect our opponents but we were never scared and never thought we couldn't make it."

He has been likened to Jose Mourinho

When a young Portuguese manager makes a bright start to life in the dugout, comparisons with Jose Mourinho are never far away. That's certainly been the case for Silva, who was only 34 when he took over at Estoril.

There are stylistic differences between the pair, with Silva favouring a more attacking approach, but they are friends. Back in 2015, Mourinhio admitted he hoped to see Silva's Olympiakos side progress to the Champions League knockout stage ahead of Arsenal.

"Arsenal are in a group where a kid friend of mine is the manager of Olympiakos," he said. "It would be fantastic for the kid's career to go through. So I have to be honest and say that I would like the kid and Olympiakos to go on."

He has a playing background

Unlike his idol Mourinho, Silva had a professional playing career. The Portuguese was a right-back and represented a number of clubs in his homeland.

He came through the youth ranks at Belenenses and went on to play for Trofense, Rio Ave, Salgueiros, Odivelas and, finally Estoril, where he spent six years before hanging up his boots.

Silva then became Estoril's director of football before taking the manager's job a few months later.
