With Mason Greenwood given his full Manchester United debut and two other youngsters on the bench, who are the club's next generation?

Greenwood is handed a first start three months after making his debut for the club while Angel Gomes and James Garner make the bench against Cardiff on the Premier League's final day.

The trio are part of six players training with United's first team, so if you're not intimately familiar with the Red Devils' up-and-coming talent, here's our lowdown of their brightest prospects...

Tahith Chong

Signed from Feyenoord in 2016, Chong is the latest player to receive the Jimmy Murphy Youth Team Player of the Year award - winning at the end of last season - and can be distinguished by his trademark big hair.

A flying winger, the Netherlands youth international impressed former manager Jose Mourinho so much that he earned a spot on United's pre-season tour to the United States and caught the eye as a lone forward against Club America.

He made his debut against Reading in the FA Cup in January, and his Premier League bow followed in the 3-2 win over Southampton in March before another appearance against Huddersfield last weekend.

"He's very humble and ultra-hard working," according to United academy boss Nicky Butt. "And he's a good pro who knows himself he has a long way to go to be a regular at this club. But he has had a sniff of it and a taste of it."

Angel Gomes

Gomes has been in and around United's first team for a couple of years now, making his senior debut against Crystal Palace on the final day of the 2016/17 season, where he became the first player born in the 2000s to make a Premier League appearance.

The cousin of former United winger Nani, the 18-year-old made a second Premier League appearance this season when he played nine minutes in a 3-1 win against Huddersfield on Boxing Day.

The creative midfielder is also the youngest-ever recipient of the Jimmy Murphy award - winning in 2017 at the age of 16 years and nine months - and became the youngest player to net a hat-trick for United's U18s in 2016, despite starting the game on the bench.

What have they said?

''Angel has got the ability to play pretty much anywhere," said Butt. "He's a footballer so everyone automatically thinks he's an attacker but we like him in the pivot role to set up play and get the ball moving.

''He keeps possession and, in European football, keeping the ball is massive. If you don't keep possession in the middle of the park, it's going to be a struggle.''

Mason Greenwood

Greenwood had to keep his eye on his performances and his schoolwork while firing his way to the top of the scoring charts for United in the U18 Premier League North before he had even completed his GCSEs.

The forward played in United's younger academy age groups as a No 10, but developed into an out-and-out striker as his game developed, and impressed so much in his new position during his debut U18 season that he was invited on the senior side's tour of the USA last summer.

Greenwood was named the Premier League 2 player of the month in April, after reaching the 30-goal tally for the season at all levels, and two in as many games for the U23s.

What have they said?

"I've seen him play a few times," United legend Andy Cole said. "I did the induction day at the start of the season and I remember Butty saying to me, 'Coley, this kid has got something'. I've seen him in training a few times. Wow. He's special.

"What freaked me out when I watched him in United's FA Youth Cup defeat against Brighton was that he looked totally left-footed and then he stepped up and took a free-kick, right-footed."

James Garner

Garner came in third behind Chong for the Jimmy Murphy accolade last season and also earned a spot on United's pre-season tour, along with his youth team-mates. A United player since he was seven, Garner got the chance to work with midfield idol and now United assistant Michael Carrick after signing his first professional contract in February.

The 18-year-old defensive midfielder made his first-team debut against Crystal Palace that month, but has been in and around the first-team picture for much of the season.

Like Gomes before him, Garner is the captain of England's U17s and steered them to the semi-finals of the European Championships in the summer, shortly after signing his first professional contract with the club.

What have they said?

"I'm made up. Obviously, it's what I've been working for since the U8s and U9s," Garner said after signing his first deal. "I'm proud for myself and for my family but I think it's only the start. My mum, dad, granddad and auntie have all come along and it's just a proud moment."

Arnau Puigmal

Spaniard Puigmal first came to the attention of United when helping to knock them out of the Mediterranean International Cup, a youth-age continental competition, with his then-club Espanyol in 2017.

Amid reported interest from Barcelona, United snapped up the young midfielder that summer and following an injury-hit debut season, he has settled into the U18s' midfield during this campaign, making 19 appearances and scoring away at Middlesbrough in September.

What have they said?

"He's a really dynamic, technical midfield player who likes to drive forward and carry the ball," former academy coach Kieran McKenna said of the youngster.

"He can handle the ball really well and seems a lovely young man too. His English is coming along and he's settling well, so I am sure he'll enjoy his time at the club."

Dylan Levitt

Despite signing his first professional contract in April 2018, Wales U19 international Levitt has not been given a sniff of the United first team until this week, and only made his first U23 start in February.

But since then he has become a hit with reserve coach Ricky Sbragia, while still impressing for the U18s, for whom he has five goals and four assists in 14 games.

Levitt has been described as in the Paul Scholes mould, and a 'creative schemer' by those at United.
