Manchester United have completed the signing of Anthony Martial from Monaco on an initial four-year deal.

United will pay Monaco £36m for the 19-year-old forward, according to Sky sources, making him the most expensive teenager in football history.

Martial, who becomes United's sixth signing of the summer, has signed for four years with the option of a 12-month extension and will wear the No 9 shirt at United, vacated by Radamel Falcao, the same shirt he wore at Monaco.

The France U21 international said: "I am so excited to be joining Manchester United. I have enjoyed my time at AS Monaco and I would like to thank them and the fans for everything they have done for me.

"I have always wanted to play in the Premier League and to join the biggest club in the world is what every young footballer dreams of. I am looking forward to meeting my new team-mates and working with Louis van Gaal who has achieved so much in his career."

Sky Sports News HQ reporter James Cooper recaps Manchester United's dealings on Deadline Day

United boss Louis van Gaal said: "Anthony is a naturally talented, young, multi-functional forward with great potential. We have been watching him for a while now and he has developed immensely during his time at AS Monaco.

"I am delighted he has joined Manchester United as I believe this is the right club for him to continue his development as a young player. He has all the attributes to become a top football player; however we need to give him time to adjust to his new environment and the rhythm of the Premier League."

Martial signed a new deal with Monaco only in June, when the Ligue 1 club's vice-president  Vadim Vasilyev called the player "untransferable".

Vasilyev said then: "He was being contacted by some of Europe's biggest clubs but we wanted to make sure that he continues his development with AS Monaco.

Ian Holloway says the price tag and expectation on 19-year-old Anthony Martial is just not fair

"What Anthony has been able to achieve at just 19 years of age is impressive, to say the least, but the best is yet to come."

His arrival comes after United sold Javier Hernandez to Bayer Leverkusen, while Adnan Januzaj has secured a loan move to Borussia Dortmund.

Robin van Persie and Radamel Falcao have also left Old Trafford this summer.
