Wayne Rooney is unlikely to play for Manchester United in their Champions League opener against PSV Eindhoven.

The England striker missed United's 3-1 victory over Liverpool at Old Trafford on Saturday Night Football because of a hamstring injury.

United travel to the Netherlands for their opening Group B game on Tuesday and manager Louis van Gaal said: "I don't think he will play.

"He is injured so we have to take care of him. I think he is very important for us and I don't want to take any risks, so that's why he didn't play against Liverpool.

"We have to wait and see if he can play against PSV because we still have days to go. I don't think he will but maybe he shall play at Southampton."

Rooney picked up the hamstring problem in training at Carrington last week and he was not with the squad at their team hotel ahead of the rival clash.

The injury is a problem for Van Gaal, however, who only has two out-and-out centre-forwards, and is set to allow youngster James Wilson out on loan.
