Former Chelsea midfielder Dennis Wise believes their match against Spurs will be pivotal for the club - and manager Antonio Conte.
Chelsea are currently placed fifth ahead of Sunday's game, live on Sky Sports, five points behind their north London rivals.
A loss would leave them eight points behind Spurs, with seven matches left to play.
With Tottenham set to host champions-elect Manchester City on April 14, Wise was asked if a win for Chelsea could put them back in the running for Champions League qualification.
Wise told Premier League Daily: "Of course it will. You have to look at the next few games - straight away, Spurs have to play Man City, and that's going to be a very difficult game.
"I think it's a big period for Antonio Conte. If we (Chelsea) can get the three points and close the gap to two, there is an opportunity for us to catch up if Spurs slip up against Man City."
Wise played for Chelsea from 1990-2001, making 261 appearances.
He added: "It's a big, big London rivalry between both teams and fans; always has been and always will be.
"It is a big game for both teams; Spurs will be looking to at least get a draw and will be happy with that. Chelsea will be looking to win because they are five points behind Spurs."
